THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITIONS
THAT DIDN'T LAST

As you enjoy Thanksgiving Day with your family, consider these little known holiday facts:

(1) The turkey was not the original feast selection. For the first Thanksgiving Day dinner in 1621, the Pilgrims cooked crow. They would invite the local Indians (As they were called back then) to enjoy their harvest with them. When the Pilgrims discovered the turkey, they cooked it up, but did not have enough for the Indians. Hence the saying,"Let them eat crow."

(2) A short lived tradition of Thanksgiving Day was the hiding of the 'Lucky Bread.' After dinner the eldest Pilgrim would hide some Thanksgiving Day bread. The children would search the room looking for it. The children that found it would get some Thanksgiving Day money, or 'gelt' as the German Pilgrims called it. The Pilgrims stopped this practice when they learnt of the Jewish tradition of hiding Passover matzo, an unleavened bread. They did not want to be identified with the Jewish people, so they started to hide a slave, instead of bread, for the children to find. This practice stopped at the end of the civil war.

(3) Another little known fact is at the first Thanksgiving Day dinner, men and women were not allowed to sit together. This rule was immediately stopped after finding the first gay Pilgrim.

(4) The original Thanksgiving Day feast took place in October. It was moved to November to coincide with the Dallas Cowboys schedule. Canadians, however, still celebrate Thanksgiving in October, while celebrating the Grey Cup in November.
